With Preston Cross Hotel in Great Bookham offering their facilities for the evening, it was . . . → Read More]]> A musical tribute evening was held on 5th December 2012 in memory of Alan Lucie, a local musician and patient of the Royal Marsden, who sadly passed away in September.

Alan played bass guitar in a number of local bands from the early 60′s and supported internationally-renowned artists such as Lulu, Georgie Fame and rock & roll legend Gene Vincent.

With Preston Cross Hotel in Great Bookham offering their facilities for the evening, it was a fitting tribute that it was packed to capacity with the dance floor overflowing on the night.  Many of the musicians who had played with Alan over the years travelled long distances to be part of the tribute evening.

With sales of a CD featuring Alan and his last band, ’BackTrack’, together with a raffle on the night, an incredible £1,300 was raised by family, friends, fans and fellow musicians.

Here’s Alan’s wife Pat, brother Ian, daughters and grandson George handing over the cheque to Radio Marsden’s treasurer, Phil Boys.

The shopping centre will donate 50p to the hospital radio station for every letter left in its special post box.

The host of celebrities, including Chris Moyles, Holly Willoughby, Peter Andre and Philip Schofield, who have already supported the station’s appeal to fund vital new studio equipment were joined this week by Father Christmas, who teamed up with Times Square’s own life size bear to officially open Santa’s Postbox.

“We have been collecting letters for Father Christmas and delivering his personal reply free of charge for many years now,” explained Centre Manager Noel Bergmann. “We are very proud of bringing a touch of magic to so many children and this year will be no exception.

“Radio Marsden does a similar job throughout the year, bringing genuine joy to patients and staff at the Royal Marsden cancer hospitals. But the station will be forced to stop broadcasting if £50,000 is not raised to replace ageing equipment, so the more letters we get for Father Christmas the more money we can donate to help keep Radio Marsden on-air.”

Santa’s Postbox is situated next to the Grotto on the ground floor of Times Square and letters can be posted free of charge until December 18^th. Remember to include your name and address so that Father Christmas can send you a reply.

Based at Sutton’s world-renowned Royal Marsden cancer hospital the radio station will be forced to stop broadcasting if £50,000 is not raised to replace ageing equipment.

The shock announcement came as veteran Radio 2 broadcaster Ken Bruce joined Radio Marsden Chairman Jason Reynolds (l-to-r pictured) this week to launch an appeal to save the station.

The BBC presenter is the first of a host of celebrities who will be giving their backing over the next few weeks to the Charity by having their photograph taken with the Radio Marsden Bear and tweeting details of the appeal to their followers.

“Hospital radio is so important to people who have to spend time in a ward and Radio Marsden has been, quite simply, one of the best for almost 44 years,” said Ken. “Please join me in doing everything we can to keep them broadcasting.”

The station’s volunteers deliver a mix of pre-recorded and live shows to hospital patients, online at www.radiomarsden.co.uk and to a much wider community audience at outside broadcasts throughout Surrey and London.

“Sadly the equipment and studios are getting old and can only stand so many short term repairs,” explained Jason Reynolds. “It will be a devastating blow to patients, hospital staff and of course the Radio Marsden team if we have to shut down. But like many charities we rely on a small band of fund-raisers, which alongside the generosity of the general public, simply cover our running costs.

“Raising £50,000 is an altogether different challenge. Of course we have tried to find the funding but time is running out and we have been forced to launch a public appeal for the money.”

London 2012 has arrived and Radio Marsden has an Olympic-sized Sports Show for you this Saturday afternoon from 2.00pm. Join Lucy Conquest and Jason Reynolds for a look back at the Torch Relay as it came through the London Borough of Sutton earlier this week, we’ll be looking at the Opening Ceremony and previewing the next few weeks of incredible sporting action.

Saturday sees an incredible array of diverse sports being competed for and there are already medals up for grabs in the swimming, judo and much more. Stay tuned to Radio Marsden for up-to-the-minute action and results as we also bring you live reports from the route of the cycle race as it passes through Surrey.

Also, aside from the Olympics, many of our local football sides are in friendly action: AFC Wimbledon travel to Eastbourne, Carshalton Athletic host Woking and Epsom & Ewell and Chipstead contest the ‘Dave Wilson Trophy’. We’ll have match previews, half-time and full-time reports from all of these games.

On Sunday 19th August, in the grounds of the Royal Marsden Hospital at Sutton (Cotswold Road entrance – SM2 5PT), we will be showcasing three live acts, including the “Acoustic Astronauts” and Kelly Michelle, beginning at 10.30am.

There will be FREE parking on site throughout the day and entrance is by donation as all monies raised go towards keeping Radio Marsden broadcasting to the patients of the two hospitals.

Along with live music, there will be line and couples-dance instruction and we’re delighted to announce that, by popular demand, we will also be joined by Phil Peel, widely recognised as the UK’s best caller, who will be doing a ‘Virginia Reel’.

Hot and cold refreshments will be available throughout the day as well as trade stalls selling authentic merchandise.

So, bring a chair and your best dancing boots and join us for a fabulous day of country music entertainment.

If you have an old mobile phone in a draw or cupboard gathering dust, take it to one of our many drop-off points (see below).

Not only will you be helping with ethical recycling but for every phone that Radio Marsden collects, we will get a donation which will go towards raising funds to keep the station broadcasting.

We have many of our local schools and the public involved and we’d be delighted if you could play your part. Tell family and friends to hunt down those old mobiles (and any corresponding chargers) and then have a look at the many local drop-off points we have enlisted, work out your nearest, and then pay them a visit! It’s as simple as that…
